- Wear a robe like the acolyte wears. Ask for help to find one that fits and to get the cincture (belt) tied.
- The pastor will cue you to begin. You are first to proceed down the aisle.
- Walk at a deliberate speed, neither too fast nor too slow.
- Grasp the staff of the cross with one hand in front of the face and the other hand should be waist high.
- Carry the cross in a strictly vertical position (not jutting forward like a flag pole) with the arms of the cross at right angles to the direction of the procession. (Inverting the hands and extending the elbows like wings is awkward, and not desirable.)
- The cross should be held high enough to be seen by the standing congregation.
- On special festivals, there may be torchbearers, who walk on either side of the crucifer. If the aisle is not wide enough for three, the torchbearers can walk together behind the cross.
- After the service, you are again first to leave. Begin when the congregation begins singing the hymn. The pastor will cue you. Wait at the center of the front until the acolyte has finished extinguishing the candles.
